Chapter 118: Silent Land of the Living Dead (7)
The four followed Sheng Churan's plan, moving across the rooftop to another building. After confirming the outside situation was no longer critical, they fought their way down to the first floor, lightened their steps, circled from the front entrance to behind cover, and took the shortcut to the hardware store according to the navigation.
With an expert like Xing Ye—whose agility was first-rate in both combat and evasion—paired with two more high-powered partners like Song Weiyang and Sheng Churan, both steady and lethally precise, the four-man squad advanced smoothly all the way.
Ji Ning was shielded in the center by the three of them. She only helped Song Weiyang with one extra bat strike the entire time; the rest of the time, there was simply no opportunity for her to step in.
Everyone had been a little worried the hardware store would already be picked clean by the time they arrived, but luckily, its location was somewhat remote, and most things were still there.
The three men each took a long-handled axe, along with some steel pipes, small hatchets, and the like.
Xing Ye picked out a lightweight, slender iron crowbar for Ji Ning. Though thin, it was exceptionally sturdy, and the end was sharpened to a point—making it another lethal weapon for killing Living Dead.
After this outing was successfully wrapped up, Ji Ning took out her phone to check the map and navigated the route from their location to the Kaimao Building.
Sheng Churan stood beside her looking at it and spoke: "We didn't think to look for a charger. From now on, it's best if one phone stays on and the other three shut down to save power. We also don't know if electricity and the network will stop being supplied; things could revert to a primitive state at any moment."
While he was speaking, Xing Ye had already found paper and a pen, took the phone from Ji Ning, and drew every large road and small path from the map onto the paper.
"This is great. Teammates who are both strong and smart," Song Weiyang said with an easy smile, arms crossed.
Ji Ning scavenged a somewhat worn-out backpack, cleared everything out of it, making it convenient to carry a bit of supplies on their person.
After leaving the hardware store, the squad's equipment and preparations had leveled up a tier, giving them more confidence in facing the mission.
Following the navigation, the group reached the entrance of another small road. This area was far more bustling than the previous alleyway; several shops had their doors wide open. Though everything was a mess, there were plenty of supplies.
Ji Ning's eyes lit up: "A pharmacy! A small supermarket! The essential doomsday skill—scavenging supplies. We can finally replenish medicine and food!"
Actually, earlier in the café and the residential building, they could have scavenged some supplies. But first, they hadn't escaped danger yet, and second, their weapons weren't handy enough, so they didn't do anything that would just add to their burden.
Now, with everything in place except for supplies, everyone unanimously decided to head for the pharmacy and the small supermarket!
Not letting the Living Dead scratch or bite you was one thing, but in this environment, scrapes, bumps, and wounds were inevitable. So Ji Ning looted quite a lot of adhesive bandages, bandages, iodine, alcohol, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other emergency medical supplies from the pharmacy.
Then the four moved together to the supermarket and packed mineral water, bread, compressed biscuits, instant noodles… plus candles and lighters for unforeseen needs. They stuffed Ji Ning's backpack completely full, with Song Weiyang taking responsibility for carrying it.
With everything ready, the squad once again set out for the mission location.
By this time, it had grown somewhat dim outside, yet the streetlights hadn't come on.
A faint sense of foreboding settled in Ji Ning's heart, wondering what other "surprises" awaited them in this approaching night.
"Squelch—"
Xing Ye's axe rose and fell, dispatching another Living Dead. He shook the sticky blood off the axe head, turned back with a frown, and said, "I feel like these things are a bit faster than during the day, and their strength is greater too."
"Right." Sheng Churan had also dispatched one. "They're definitely different."
Song Weiyang moved to stand a little closer to Ji Ning, just in case something unexpected happened.
Ji Ning stopped walking and said in a firm tone, "I don't think we should rush the mission. It seems like there won't be any lights after dark. Let's find a place to first observe the situation after nightfall. If it really won't work, we can rest for the night and move again tomorrow."
Just then, the system panel lit up with a notification message.
【Male Player No. 8 contracted the Infection variant virus, permanently deceased.】
Ji Ning was about to speak when two living NPCs came running head-on from the distance, screaming as they ran: "Help! Ahhhhh!!"
In the dim light, all they could see was a horde of extraordinarily fast, wildly thrashing deformed humans chasing behind them. Missing hands and feet clearly no longer hindered their advance.
"This way! Run!" Xing Ye let out a low roar, turned around, scooped Ji Ning up sideways, and took the lead charging into the residential community right next to them.
Sheng Churan and Song Weiyang didn't hesitate either, covering Xing Ye and Ji Ning as they pushed deeper into the community.
